Lab 5 – What can my router do?

Objectives: Connect the router so that it’s functioning then perform a factory reset. Proceed to access the router by entering its IP in to your browser and login as administrator to find additional security settings and different router information/settings that can be modified.

Equipment list: Belkin N150 router, router power cord, and Ethernet cable.

Notes and Observations: After connecting the power cable to the router and powering it on and factory resetting the router I was able to enter the router’s IP into my browser to access information/settings for the network. One setting I learned about is configuring the router’s ports which have options to use 100M, 10M, or 1G full duplex/half duplex which allows information to be sent faster/simultaneously.

Lab 4 – Editing Video

Objectives: Download a youtube video and use a video editing software to cut the video while also adding in pictures and copyright free music.

Equipment list: Video editing software (I used Sony Vegas)

Notes and Observations: I began by downloading the video and importing it into my video editing software. Once the video was in I began “cutting” the video segments so that only the parts I wanted to keep were present. I then found a Creative Commons image and added it to the video, I tried to add effects to the image to make it “fit in” with the video as much as possible. Lastly, I obtained copyright free music to add to my video and then created an ending clip, rendered, and then uploaded the video to Youtube.

Diagrams, flowcharts, and figures:

Questions: Which of these licenses could you use in your class video project? Why? Which license would not be acceptable to use in your video project? Why not? Which licenses allow you to use the work as long as you share your work with others through Creative Commons as well?

Answer: In a class video project students would use Attribution license because it allows others to “distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon your work” as long as credit is given to the original creation.

Answer: The Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs license would not be acceptable to use in your video project because it states that the creation cannot be changed in any way or use it commercially.

Answer: Attribution-ShareAlike license allows you to use the work as long as the person credits the original creator and licenses their new creations under the identical terms.

Conclusions: This lab helped me understand how well I can edit videos for future projects or assignments. It has been awhile since I’ve used editing software to edit a video for an assignment so this lab was good with helping me remember all the things I can do with video editing software.

Lab 3 – Cable Making

Objectives: Create a working CAT5 cable and a patch panel using the supplies provided.

Equipment list: Crimper, 2x RJ-45 connectors, cable tester, scissors, cable insulation stripper, patch panel, punch down tool, and 2x 3-foot length CAT5 UTP.

Notes and Observations: To make a working cable I began by removing the cable insulation so the wires were exposed. After the wires were exposed I separated all 8 wires and straightened them all out to ensure they fit into the correct RJ-45 pin. After the wires were straightened I then lined them up in the correct order and proceeded to trim them down to a shorter length and inserted them into the RJ-45 connector. After inspecting the wires inside the RJ-45 connector to ensure they were in the correct order I used the crimper tool and repeated the whole process again on the other end of the wire.

The second project in this lab asked to connect a CAT5 UTP cable to the patch panel, I began by untwisting the ends of the wires and placed them in the correct pin so that they wouldn’t move. After all the patch panel wires were in place I used the punch down tool to lock them in place and repeated the process for the other end of the wire.

Questions: Why are the UTP cables twisted together?

UTP cables are twisted together because it helps reduce “crosstalk” between other wires and also reduces external electromagnetic interference.

Conclusions: Before this lab I was unaware of how UTP cables were used to create Ethernet cables, I have now learned how to create an Ethernet cable and much more. I had a few difficulties such as the wire going in to the wrong pin on the RJ-45 connector. However, through trial and error I found it much easier to connect each wire to the correct pin if I trimmed down the wires to be as short as possible before trying to attach the RJ-45 connector.

Lab 2 – Basic Computer Hardware

Objectives: The objectives of this lab is to get a better understanding of the components that run a computer and figuring out where in the computer they are located and how each part interacts with each other.

Equipment list: Computer, I/O panel, motherboard, CPU, RAM, GPU, HDD, and PSU.

Notes and Observations: All computer hardware discussed in this lab are necessary for a computer to run, all the parts interact with each other so that a computer can run. Some hardware is more important than others (CPU).

Diagrams, flowcharts, and figures:

N/A

References: Christensson, P. (2014, July 11). CPU Definition. Retrieved 2020, Jan 29, from https://techterms.com

Questions: How many and what type of I/O ports does the computer you examined have?

The computer I am looking at has 12 I/O ports; 6x USB 3.0 ports, 1x HDMI port, 1x DisplayPort, 2x USB 3.1 ports, 1x Ethernet port, and 1x DVI port.

What is the purpose of the CPU, the HDD and the RAM memory?

The Central Processing Unit runs the operating system and applications and is responsible for controlling other parts of the computer. A hard drive disk or HDD is responsible for storing everything downloaded onto a computer, the HDD/SSD is also where the computers operating system would be installed. Random Access Memory (RAM) is a type of memory or information storage in a computer which is used by running programs.

What does magnetic core memory look like? (Take a photo and write up a description.) What is the purpose of magnetic core memory?

To me, a magnetic core memory looks similar to the slot that the CPU is placed in. From what I could tell, the purpose of magnetic core memory is to act as a form of RAM.

Conclusions: This lab covered the important components that make it possible to run a computer and how those parts function with one another. This lab taught me about a few pieces of hardware I previously had no knowledge of such as the magnetic core memory.

Lab 1 – Make a Website

Objectives: A brief statement of your objectives (not mine), written in your own words.

Equipment list: Include equipment descriptions and software.

Notes and Observations: Identify the procedures followed and observations made along the way. Compare the results with what was expected. Include handwritten notes (scan these as images), observations, and answers from the lab.

Diagrams, flowcharts, and figures: When applicable include diagrams. Refer to diagrams in your documentation by figure number.

References: Cite any reference material that was used while performing the exercise.

Questions: Include questions from the laboratory handout and their answers.

Conclusions: This section should summarize your accomplishments and observations, and should reflect the degree to which the experiment succeeded. A brief discussion of significant errors, troubleshooting steps taken, and necessary revisions should be included. This is the part of the report where you demonstrate what you have learned, and is therefore the most important!
